E-MRS Fall Meeting 2010, FP7 Session: Advances in materials under EU Framework Programmes

Subject
Aim: to present achievements in materials-related R&D obtained within the projects realized under
EU Framework Programmes.

Materials has been recognized as one of key enablers of technological development. Appreciating the
role of materials European Commission has established a special area for support of materials
development under 6th and 7th Framework Programmes, within the NMP (Nanosciences and
nanotechnologies, Materials and new Production) Priority/Theme. For materials-related projects
European Commission contributed over 500 M€ under FP6 (2002-2006), and about 240 M€
under so-far closed FP7 calls 2007-2009. NMP priority supported also other joint actions, such as
Era-Nets (MATERA, MNT), COST, EUREKA and metrology programme.

This substantial contribution resulted in about 210 project funded (115-FP6, 95-FP7 2007-2009),
including 37 large scale integrated projects, 139 small or medium scale research-focused projects
(or STRPs), 18 coordinating and supporting actions and CSA actions and 11 Networks of Excellence. 
Within FP6 project on materials numerous research papers has been published, and other substantial
achievements (patents) have been reported. 
It is to underline the role of FP-founded projects in stimulating the academia-industry
partnership. The share of industrial partners in FPs-founded project was about 17% and increased up
to 33% for FP7 calls.
