Model of the glutamine domain of glucosamine-6-phosphate synthase complexed with its inhibitor N3-(4-methoxyfumaroyl)-L-2, 3-diaminopropanoic acid (FMDP).

Part of staff and Ph.D. students of CREM.

Research focus of the Centre:
Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Unit (PBU), is a multidisciplinary research centre (CREM) carrying out studies at every level of structural organisation, from molecules through supramolecular systems, organelles, cells, tissues to whole organisms. Research in the centre is aimed mainly at the rational design of chemotherapeutic antifungal and anticancer agents, construction of recombinant proteins, DNA vaccines and molecular diagnostics. The PBU is considered one of the leading research/educational centres in the field of medicinal chemistry/biotechnology in NAS.

Polish research projects currently run in the Centre:
29 national and 3 international projects were run in 2001, including:

  • NATO Collaborative Linkage Grant "Molecular electrostatic properties of G-quadruplexes structures formed by telomeric DNA";
  • "Basic derivatives of amphotericin B antibiotic, new vectors for the new transport system of oligonucleotides applied into antisense and gene therapy";
  • "Anti bovine leukaemia virus (BLV) DNA vaccine".
  • Human resources:
    The PBU staff consists of 36 permanent members, including 6 full and assoc. professors, 20 researchers holding Ph.D. and 34 Ph.D. students. The staff members represent different research fields, like: synthetic and computational chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, microbiology and molecular biology.

    Training possibility:
    - workshop on molecular diagnostics (June 2004);
    - workshop on "Application of computational chemistry in drug design" (2005);
    - workshop on multi-drug resistance (2005);
    - international postgraduate studies.

    Scientific co-operation:
    Scientist from the centre collaborate with 34 European, American, and Asian scientific institutions. The joint research is carried out either within the frame of a formal agreement (13) or informal co-operations (21). Most of the joint projects are run together with groups from EU countries, especially from France, Italy, Germany and United Kingdom.

    Co-operation with industrial partners:
    Scientists from the centre run several small projects in co-operation with local small biotechnological enterprises. Co-operation with Chrysalon Company (France) and British Technology Group (UK) has been launched.

    Other info:
    An important periodical scientific event organised by PBU is the International Symposium on Molecular Aspects of Chemotherapy. Already 8 such symposia have been organised since 1984 by the committee, supervised by Professor E. Borowski. The event is unique in the field of chemotherapy in whole Europe and even in the world. The symposia have also become an excellent platform for exchanging ideas and helped to establish new collaborations - especially between scientist from NAS and EU countries.
