Research focus of the Centre:
The Centre conducts studies in four main areas: land use and land development for agricultural purposes and environmental protection, water management in agriculture, sanitary issues in rural areas, management of grasslands.
The scientific research and implementation activities of the Centre include socio-economic, technological and environmental-economical aspects of strategic and operational issues on regional and local scale, concerning protection, determining and rational use of water, soil, landscape resources, grasslands in the process of sustainable and multifunctional development of rural areas.
These are the issues, which among others relate to: the environment-friendly waste management and recycling and sustainable use of off-farm waste; the reductions of emissions and pollutants of all kinds; the protection of water, landscape and natural areas in relation to agricultural production and another activities in rural areas; the sustainable use of soil and water resources through the prevention of erosion, salination and groundwater spoilage;the agricultural systems adapted for extreme conditions; the development of innovative and efficient land reclamation systems, water re-use and recycling.

Polish research projects currently run in the Centre:
Polish State Committee for Scientific Research (KBN) projects:

  • Elaborating of theoretical bases for management of water resources in meadow river valleys on the example of the Upper Narew Valley;
  • Optimization of nitrogen and phosphorus utilization in a farm for protection of water and atmosphere quality;
  • Technical and natural bases of restitution of natural conditions in river valleys on drained areas excluded from agricultural production;
  • Good agricultural practices in management of useful water reserve of meadow soils in diversified climatic conditions of Poland.
  • European research projects currently run in the Centre:

  • PROWATER - Program for the prevention of diffuse water pollution with phosphorus from degradated and re-wetted peat soils. V Framework Program.
  • BAAP - Baltic agricultural run-off Action Programme. Conducted with the Agriculture Society in Malmo, Sweden.
  • ALTERRA - Hydrological system analysis in the valley of Biebrza River. Coordinated by Alterra, Green World Research: Netherlands.
  • Quality:
    The Centre/Institute has been building up its scientific reputation since it has been established (1953). Most of the it's employees are renowned authorities in their respective fields,and by participation in various international research programs as well as memberships in science associations (ICID, IPS, ISE, ISSE, International Scientific Centre of Fertilizers, Wetland International, ISTRO FAO, HELCOM) are known not locally only but also internationally. They participate also in authorities of these international organization, such like: ICID - International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage and IPS - International Peat Society. It needs to be emphasized that the Centre's employees actively participate in trainings, conferences, and seminaries organized by other institutions. The classes are also arranged in the CESNA's training centres where the Institute's employees act as instructors. The active participation of the Centre's employees in international conferences and in publishing in international and national refereed journals is significant.
    The core research and development activity takes place at the headquarters in Falenty in seven research departments: of Regional Studies for Development of Rural Areas, of Nature Protection in Rural Areas, of Water Resources, of Pastures and Meadows, of Land Reclamation Engineering, of Rural Sanitation, of Soil and Water Chemistry and in 5 regional specialized divisions throughout the country (Cracow, Wroclaw, Elblag, Szczecin, Bydgoszcz), 2 experiment farms and 2 research stations. The headquarters in Falenty and all field units together comprise a country-wide scientific research network.

    Equipment:
    The research centre in Falenty is equipped with laboratories for: hydraulics, soil science and geotechnology, chemical-physics-biology water (sewage), soil and plant analysis. The laboratories are renowned in the country for its high quality analyses and wide range of expertise. In Falenty, there are also permanent research stations for rural areas sewerage (three types of sewage treatment plants, a prototype of a water treatment station) and a natural gas boiler house. The regional divisions contain research laboratories for chemical, physical and biological testing of water, soil and plants. In the river valleys, there are the Centre's research stations for lysimetry and meteorology, as well as, meadow-ecology positions, which function for over half a century. The Centre also manages experimental hydrological drainage areas of the 3rd and 4th kind for farming mainly.

    Human resources:
    The permanent staff of the Centre consists of 281 full-time employees, which includs 164 individuals engaged in research work. Out of these, 77 members of staff are engineering technicians. The core CESNA scientific workers amount to 85 (inc. 9 professors, 11 ass. professors, 32 Ph.D.). The research staff specializes in: water management, environmental protection, water-, land-engineering, reclamation, rural water supply, sewerage and sewage treatment plant, waste management, meadow science, soil science and biology, chemistry, geology etc.

    Training possibility:
    There is a possibility for foreigneers to take part in trainings, scholarships, studies, fellowships (inc. Maria Sklodowska fellowship) etc. in the Centre.

    Scientific co-operation:
    The Centre broadly cooperates with leading scientific centres in Netherlands, USA, Sweden, UK, France, Denmark and Germany. In the years 1995 -2001 the Institute has undertaken 27 international programmes.
    Every year the Centre hosts experts from all over the world. They are scientists engaged in collective international, bilateral, framework programs and participating in conferences organized in the IMUZ, Falenty and its regional research centres. For example, in 2000, the researchers from Belarus, Bulgaria, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Ukraine, Israel have visited the IMUZ.
    The membership, co-operation and participation in authorities within the international organisations (ICID-International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage, IPS - International Peat Society, ISE - International Soil Exchange, ISSE - International Science Society, International Scientific Centre of Fertilizers, Wetland International, ISTRO - International Soil Tillage Researcg Organization, FAO - Food and Agriculture Organization, HELCOM) has been significant.

    Co-operation with industrial partners:
    There are no established permanent links with the industrial partners, but the CESNA has strong ties to economic and social environment of Poland. The Institute is the most important advisor to the state and central government institutions such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry of Environment, the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFEPWM), the Agricultural Property Agency of the State Treasury (APAST), the Agency for Restructuring and Modernisation of Agriculture (ARMA).

    Other info:
    The most important Centre's accomplishments include: the world unique scientific research results, which have been conducted continuously for almost half a century in the biggest national valleys: in the Biebrza, Narew, Notec, and other Polesie Lubelskie river valleys; creation of the Polish school for bog science and agromelioration of heavy soils, formation of the foundation for the Polish grassland science; the environmental monitoring in selected river drainage areas and their tributaries regarding the surface and ground waters status, precipitation and surface waters quality, soils and vegetations, emissions and absorption of nitrogen agents by animal breeding farms, bacteriological research of ground waters.
    The Institute as the only organization of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development:

  • specializes in setting up practical methods to limit the negative impact of agricultural production on the water, soil, and air quality;
  • collects results from long term research and hydro-meteorological observations using a network of data gathering sites.
