Global climate change is a serious environmental challenge that requires credible action. We have to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from our facilities and products. One of most important sources of CO2 emissions are coal-fired power plants.

It is clear that coal will remain the backbone in the global supply of energy especially for up-and-coming countries like China and India, but also for industrialized countries in Europe and indeed the whole world. There is a serious problem of decreasing availability of resources of other fossil fuels - oil and natural gas. Hence, along with the impact on climate change the security of supply of energy becomes a priority. For this reason we are facing the great challenge of realigning our supply of energy in a more secure, sustainable and climate friendly manner. We have to develop and implement clean coal technologies. There is a catalogue of technologies such as underground and surface coal gasification, improved and highly efficient combustion (e.g. oxy-fuel), post-processing, coal-to-gas, coal-to-liquid, and coal-to-hydrogen which equipped with the carbon capture and storage (CCS) options provide a possibility of rapidly and significantly reducing CO2 emissions.

All these technologies should serve as a bridge until a sustainable supply of energy based on renewable sources is really available, at reasonable prices. Europe is taking the leading role by preparing a framework for reduction by 20% emissions of CO2 up to 2020. The EU Flagship Programme is announced to construct 12 demonstration power plants exploiting CCS technologies. Europe wants to introduce a number of industrial initiatives which are proposed in the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan). Poland, in which production of electric energy is dependent in 96% upon hard coal and lignite, wants to take a lead in promotion of clean coal technologies.

Moreover, in the context of climate change there is observed a growing interest in nuclear energy as really zero-emission one. Technological advances make it very safe. There are available new possibilities of storing nuclear wastes. Global resources of nuclear fuel are significant. Therefore, can we really talk about renaissance of nuclear energy? It would be useful to carry out such discussion in Poland, a country as yet without nuclear energy, which by requirements of low-carbon European policy is strongly pushed towards entering into nuclear power.

The aim of the conference is to discuss political, economical as well as technical aspects of deployment of clean coal and nuclear technologies in combating climate change.
