Some background information
Digital technologies have proven instrumental in enabling innovations across all sectors of the economy. As emphasised under the strategy for Digitising European Industry the combination of digital technologies like Internet of Things (IoT), AI, robotics or Big Data with new industrial partnerships will boost innovation. As IoT technology and possibilities advance, offerings will transition from products to premium products and services, and ultimately to platforms, as is the case for, for example, applications in the mobile sector. Advances related to the convergence of digital home platforms, trusted solutions and big data applications will transform industry and provide solutions to several major societal challenges, such as improving the monitoring of health and the independent living of elderly, tackling climate change through reducing energy consumption and improving the management of the energy system at home, increasing the safety and security. Especially in the home sector, new innovation actually comes through the convergence of consumer trends and traditional B2B services.
The Focus Area Digitising and Transforming European Industry and Services under WP2018-20 includes the launch of a set of initiative supporting the building of digital platforms of the future. Digital Platforms are also seen as a strategic requirement for Europe and they are one of the key topics of the Work Programme 2018-20.
