abraandfraces - "Edge failure as means of concurrently estimating the abrasian and fracture resistance of nanocrystalline hard materials and coatings"prof Stanislaw Scieszka Politechnika Slaska, Gliwice
There are several methods for the measurement of fracture toughness although there is no standard method for hardmetals. Problems connected with the effective and reliable use of these experimental methods stimulated efforts towards the development of empirical and semiempirical formulae describing the relationship between the critical stress intensity factor and other mechanical and physical properties
that are much easier to evaluate. One such method is currently developed in proposed "Center of Excellence". The method is based on the concept of edge chipping the initial transition stage of abrasion wear which is controlled by brittle fracture process.

NANOSET - NANOfluids: Simulations, Experiment and Theory.
Nanofluids have various technological applications: medical filters, cooling in powerplants, design of electronical systems, processes controling design of new materials. Nanofluids are ordinary fluids enchanced by nanoparticles. This causes changes in global macroscopic properties of fluids. For example - by adding specific thermal materials, cooling effects are significantly increased ( about 30%) by adding magnetic particles, magnetic properties are changed. This is used in blood filters. This proves that the topic is interdiciplinary. Importance of nanofluids application starts from micro-scale (bio-proceses) to every day scale (cooling of nuclear power plants) and ends on macro-scale such as the recicling system on the international space station. Triboptima - Tribological characteristics of brake friction couple optimmisation by means of an artificial neural network (ANN) and genetic algorithm (GA).
A brake lining and a rotor are the most crucial elements of the friction brake system which controls the kinetic energy change to heat through the friction. These two elements of the brake friction couple require many properties, such as constant friction coefficient, high strenght, low wear rate, low noise and anti-shudder characteristics, low fade, low load and speed sensitivity. To meet these requirements the brake linings are made of many components such as resins, fibers, solid lubricants, abrasive particles and fillers while the brake rotors are manufactured from various alloys and composites (MMC). Obscure composition, poorly understood tribological mechanisms, and numerous brake designs make it difficult to have a purely scientific approach to these classes of materials. Development of friction materials for a typical end use has traditionally been more of an art than a science. Hence main objective of the Center is to apply scientific approch to development of the brake friction couple.
